Summary for Editor-in-Chief

  • We are seeking an Editor-in-Chief to oversee all aspects of content production and event coverage on the site.
  • The Editor-in-Chief will manage the day-to-day production of all written content online including scripts, editorial, blogs, headlines, promos, etc. We are looking for real web management experience and enthusiasm for online media.
  • The Editor-in-Chief will be responsible for the development of creative writing styles and accompanying style guides. He/She will ensure continuity among the editorial units and set the tone of those units accordingly. Additionally, the Editor-in-Chief will be continually challenged with the differentiation of content, tone and editorial among other production units including Television and Print.
  • Specifically, the organization will be looking to the Editor-in-Chief to formulate content plans. create and manage editorial schedules (both long and short term), develop distinctive tone and voice for editorial packages and site sections, manage the production of assignments from producers and partners through the production shop, and manage the team of creative professionals. The Editor-in-Chief will have a close working relationship with the Creative Director (Information Architecture and Design), VP, Interactive, on-air creative team, and the Magazines.
  • Detailed Work Activities
  • Integrate other creative resources and assets from Television and other writing teams
  • Supervise production materials, activities and daily production processes
  • Implement staff policies and manage full-time and freelance, contract staff
  • Interpret information to formulate story ideas and execute in online friendly ways
  • Organize story elements and coverage information beyond articles of text and pictures
  • Track metrics that demonstrate improvements in content quality (unique, user frequency/duration) and implement revisions to plan to achieve group goals
  • Identify interests of site visitors and continually tailor product to their needs and expectations
  • Collaborate to develop new interactive tools
  • Continually surprise and delight fans with creativity and enhanced funtionality
  • Supervise the verification of facts: sources, and historical data
  • Supervise and write headlines and promos while ensuring correct (or relevant) grammar, punctuation or spelling
  • Follow copyright laws to protect internal intellectual property and exposure in use of outside intellectual property
  • Assemble criteria for Junior writers as well as writing style guide
  • Interview and hire writers and reporters or negotiate contracts, royalties, and payments for authors or freelancers.
  • Develop story or content ideas, considering reader or audience appeal.
  • Review and approve proofs submitted by composing room prior to publication production.
  • Confer with management and editorial staff members regarding placement and emphasis of developing news stories
  • Meet frequently with artists, typesetters, layout personnel, marketing directors, and production managers to discuss projects and resolve problems.
  • Verify facts, dates, and statistics, using standard reference sources.
  • Monitor news-gathering operations to ensure utilization of all news sources, such as press releases, telephone contacts, radio, television, wire services, and other reporters.
  • Assign topics, events and stories to individual writers or reporters for coverage.
  • Required Skills and Experience
  • Knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar.
  • Knowledge of web and media production techniques including general communication, and dissemination techniques and methods. This includes alternative ways to inform and entertain via interactive, written, and visual media.
  • Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services. This includes customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction.

    Summary One of the world's most respected media and entertainment conglomerates is seeking an editorial assistant, based on experience, to work in a highly desirable area of the television broadcasting industry.   This job is for a person who aspires to be a senior most editor in the future where television is the primary platform.  This is an entry level or senior level position for a person with related work experience and strong academics.

    This person will work and interface with talented, writers, editors, producers, broadcasting and advertising executives as they learn the business by coordinating important matters for a noted Senior Vice President and the Senior Editors who manage the review, editing and approval of creative materials for production and On-Air dissemination.  Outstanding academics and advanced skills with the English language are required.

    The Senior Vice President in charge of this department is a fine gentleman and noted mentor.  One of the best features of this job, is the ability to work for and learn from this highly noted and respected broadcasting executive and his staff of editors.

    Responsibilities
  • Coordinate the review of broadcast materials by the Editors to include scripts, storyboards and tapes to ensure compliance with appropriate guidelines and network standards.
  • Communicate in writing and by phone with advertising agencies, producers, writers and broadcasting executives on commercial and programming issues relevant to those concerned. 
  • Handle requests for substantiation and negotiations for revisions in audio and visual segments for the Editors.
  • Notify in writing and verbally other divisions of the Network requiring edited elements for submission.
  • Where appropriate, traffic material to Law Department on legal issues raised by broadcast material.
  • Traffic to Research Department, testing materials sent in to support commercial claims.
  • Heavy phone contact with clients, producers, advertising executives and others.
  • If assigned, will coordinate editors to production locations to view events, run throughs, tapings and screenings of television shows.
  • Skills Required
  • College degree and strong academics  - English degrees highly desirable with 3.5 or above - However, related exp. is key also.
  • As a senior editor ($50,000) related advertising or TV experience reviewing commercial copy is required.
  • Excellent editing, writing and verbal skills
  • Ability to articulate in a tactful and diplomatic manner
  • Personal knowledge and enjoyment of film and television
  • Ability to stay calm under significant pressure
  • Ability to take initiative, defuse crises immediately and organize and prioritize
  • Related internships or work experience in publishing, advertising or broadcasting as an editorial assistant desired
  • Should be self motivated with an exceptional work ethic and high energy level
